The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
